2017 Underwater ROV Competition:
Cros-Lex High School Innovators (Robotics) Club Dives to Excellence
The Croswell-Lexington High School Innovators (Robotics) Club has successfully completed a second year participating in Square One Network’s Underwater ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Competition. The contest was on March 4, 2017 at Waterford-Mott High School. Thirty-three teams from grades 3 to 12 grade competed by designing, constructing, and piloting ROVs in an indoor pool. They also presented their ROV to a panel of judges.
This year two teams from Cros-Lex totaling nine students competed. In the first challenge (“Swimming Upstream”), they drove their ROVs through a PVC tunnel and picked up 1.5 inch tees from one container at the bottom of the pool and placed them in another container. The second challenge (“All Clear Flag”) consisted of picking up pool rings from the bottom of the pool and placing them on a hook at surface In the third event (“Lamprey”), the teams counted and calculated the density of holes in a piece of wood at the bottom of the pool that represented Sea Lamprey . Finally, each team entered an underwater drag race to determine the fastest ROV. In addition to competing in these events, both teams had to present their designs to a panel of judges. Team A consisted of Trevor Herbert, Robert Nays, Christian Roberts and Madelyn Witham. Team B consisted of Gavin Brown, Johnathan Holm, Gabriel Nantroup, Jacob Varosi, and Jacqueline Wahl.
At the end of the competition, Cros-Lex students competed against nine other high school teams in their division. Team B came in first place in the “All Clear Flag” event using a unique “3-prong hook” design on their ROV. Both Cros-Lex teams achieved first place in the “Lamprey” event in a three-way tie. They also ranked fourth and fifth for the most points during the obstacle events in the pool. Both teams tied for third place for their ROV design. In addition, the Cros-Lex teams placed fifth and sixth for their engineering abilities and second and fourth for their team’s overall presentation.
Team B member, Jacqueline Wahl, said, “I love how we all came together as a family in the end. We had many laughs during the building of the ROV and at the competition that I will never forget. Plus, we had some struggles during the preparations, but I trusted my team and kept an open mind and we progressed through. I am extremely glad I stuck through thoughts challenges and now I feel much better about what we accomplished.
My team gave me the courage, strength, and trust I needed to be a team driver, they didn’t care how well I performed, even though we were the top team in the senior division to retrieve the most pool rings and put them on a hook at the pool’s surface. Along with my team members, we were just happy to be there.
I am extraordinarily honored to be part of the Croswell Lexington Robotics Club, and to call everyone in it part of my team. Furthermore, thinking of that, we are part of that family. Granted, I’m only one of the two girls on the team, but I feel we are like one of the guys. I am excited to start it up again next year and encourage many to join.”
