Oct 22, 2016 Competition @ Kettering University:
Pioneers Blazing New Pathways in Robotics
The Croswell-Lexington Pioneer Innovators Club is proud to announce its participation in its first Vex Robotics Competition, hosted at Kettering University in Flint on October 22. For over a year, a dozen students from ninth to eleventh grade have been learning, designing, and preparing for their first competition.
Students are using a clawbot design, which is a robot on four wheels that is roughly 18 x 18 x 18 inches with a single long arm. This year’s challenge is to move twelve inch foam star pieces to the opponent’s side of a field, either over or under a three-rail fence within the allotted time. During the first twenty seconds, students have to program the robot to move on its own. After the autonomous round, for the remaining two minutes, students switch over to driver control and the objective of the contest is to move and to keep as many stars on the opponent’s side as possible.
Gavin Brown and Jacqueline Wahl made it to the semi-final round. Gabriel Natroup and Jacob Varosi entered the first round of the finals. Other members of the club who competed are Trevor Herbert, Johnathan Holm, Robert Nays, Tyler Soedren, and Madelyn Witham.
Cros-Lex ranked 10th, 19th, 20th, and 21st out of 37 teams in the qualifying rounds. Our teams ranked 6th, 7th, 11th, and 19th place for their driving skills. In the programming skills, our teams ranked 6th, 7th, 11th, and 19th place.
Science teachers and sponsors Charlie Jahn and Mike Corsetti are very proud of their students’ accomplishments, especially since their students were competing against advanced teams for the first time. Students are currently reviewing, modifying and re-designing their robots to compete in their next competition at the Huron Area Technical Career on December 3 in Bad Axe. Dec 3, 2016 Competition @ Huron Area Technical Career:
Cros-Lex Robotic Teams Bring Home Their First Trophies
The Croswell-Lexington Pioneer Innovators Club has reached a new milestone. After a month of improvements and additional practices, two teams entered the Huron Area Technical Career Center’s Vex Qualifying Competition on December 3rd. Team A includes Gavin Brown, Trevor Herbert, Robert Nays, and Madelyn Witham. Team B is Johnathan Holm, Gabriel Natroup, Tyler Soedren, and Jacob Varosi.
During the nearly three hours of qualifying matches. Each of the two teams was constantly earning points to enter the elimination and finals round in which they were teamed up with other school districts. At the end of the qualifying matches, the Cros-Lex teams ranked second and seventh. This ranking gave each of the two teams a huge advantage by allowing them to team up with one of the top six teams. After creating alliances, both Cros-Lex groups were in the top two teams.
Entering the elimination round, the Cros-Lex teams were prepared and excited to have a chance to win the tournament. Over forty minutes, six alliances participated in an elimination process which started with the lower ranked teams trying to win two out of three matches each. Both Cros-Lex teams were on opposing sides, and each tried their best. In the end, after an exciting round in the finals, Team A won first place and Team B won second place. In addition, Team A of the Cros-Lex Robotic Club earned the Sportsmanship Trophy for helping their teammates’ robot by assisting to pick it up after it tipped over.
Team A of the Croswell-Lexington Pioneer Innovators Club has qualified for the State tournament at MSU on Sunday, February 19, 2017. Both advisors Mr. Charlie Jahn and Mr. Mike Corsetti would like to express their thanks for the support of our school, parents, and the community which made this opportunity for our students possible.

February 19, 2017 - Michigan State Competition
Surpassing Another Milestone in the Cros-Lex High School Robotics Club History
The Cros-Lex Innovators Club (the Robotics Club) reached another milestone this year and earned a chance to compete at the State level at the Michigan Vex Robotics State High School Champion at Michigan State University on February 19. The spot was earned by winning first place at the Bad Axe Area Vex tournament. After six matches with three wins and three losses, the Cros-Lex Vex Team A ended the season with a 19th place ranking out of 48 teams in the State of Michigan for the 2016-2017 school year.
Since the beginning of school year, Trevor Herbert, Robert Nays, and Madelyn Witham, the members of Team A, have demonstrated excellent communication, teamwork, and self-awareness. In their tournaments, they ranked 21 out of 36 at the Kettering University Vex Competition in October and ranked 7 out of 24 teams in the Bad Axe Vex Competition in December. They brought home two trophies from the Bad Axe Tournament: a first place and a Judge’s Award for helping a fellow teammate.
Madelyn Witham of Cros-Lex Team A stated, “I’ve learned that bigger definitely does not equal better, as a lot of big robots are clumsy. I walked away happy with our accomplishments, especially for our first year, and I think next year we will be prepared to do even better.”
Club members are eager to take their experiences and what they have learned through the competition season and apply it to next year’s competition season. Coaches Mr. Charles Jahn and Mr. Mike Corsetti are very proud of their students and are thrilled with their students’ accomplishments during their first year of Vex Competition, especially since they made it all the way to state level in their rookie year.
