2018 Underwater ROV Competition:
Cros-Lex Underwater ROV Team Win
The Cros-Lex Pioneer Innovators (Robotic) Club brings homes two more trophies from the 2018 Square One Network Underwater ROV competition at Roseville High School on Saturday, March 10, 2018.
Starting three and half years ago, with two teachers and create one team of five students ranked in 3rd place in March of 2016. The second year, two teams were established that consisted with nine students and earned a 4th and 5th place ranking. Now this year, we are honored and proud of overall trophy, 1st place in the presentation, 2nd place in performance, and 2nd place in innovation.
This year’s competition challenges include four events and a team presentation. The first challenge consisted of the team’s Underwater ROV to move through two hula-hoops and pickup water bottles from one storage container to another eight feet away within a 15-minute period. The second challenge had teams gathering as many floating balloons from the center of pool and driving them to the pool’s edge. The third challenge had each team measure the vertical distance of a PVC pipe only using their underwater camera and homemade measuring device. Finally, teams competed in an elimination drag race to find the fastest underwater ROV.
Mr. Charles Jahn has been coaching these high school teams in the past three years and is extreme honored and proud of how well these students performed. We had no idea or thought of winning the competition. Students are already to enter the competition again and how to reclaim the title for next year.
Student driver Jackie Wahl says everyone was extremely helpful. We not just a team but it feels like a family. Robotics is not just about socializing and flipping switches, it is about all the fun we have in the mistakes we make, how much we learn from each other, as well as forming a team and helping each other out. I am also looking forward in seeing everyone back for another fun filled year.
